A hair dryer is an electromechanical device that blows ambient or hot air into wet hair to accelerate the evaporation of water to dry the hair. Hair dryers provide better control over the shape and style of hair by accelerating and regulating the formation of temporary hydrogen bonds in each strand. These bonds are strong (allowing for stronger styling than the sulphur bonds formed by permanent wave products), but they are temporary and very sensitive to moisture. They disappear with one wash. Blow-dried hairstyles tend to have volume and discipline that can be enhanced with styling products, brushes and combs during blow-drying to add tension, hold and lift.

• Dryers were invented at the end of the 19th century. The first solid model was created by Alexandre F. Godefroy in his salon in France. Household portable hair dryers first appeared in the 1920s. Hair dryers are used in beauty salons by professional stylists and home users. Most hair dryers consist of electric heating coils and a fan that blows air (usually with a universal motor).
• The heating element in most dryers is bare, twisted nichrome wire wrapped around mica insulators. Nichrome is used because of its high resistance and low rusting when heated. A survey of shops in 2007 found that most hair dryers had ceramic heating elements (like ceramic heaters) for their "instant heat". This means that it takes less time for the dryer to heat up and dry your hair.
• Cool air reduces frizz and can help increase shine. Many have an "ionic" function that reduces static build-up in the hair, although the effectiveness of ionic technology is debatable. The manufacturers claim that it makes the hair "softer". Hair dryers are available with accessories such as diffusers, airflow concentrators, and chamber nozzles. A diffuser is a handle used for thin, coloured, permed or naturally curly hair. This breaks up the airflow, so your hair doesn't fly around as it dries.
• Hair dries more slowly, at a cooler temperature and with less physical disturbance. This makes the hair frizz free and adds volume to the hair. An airflow concentrator works unlike a diffuser. This makes the head of the dryer narrower and thus helps to concentrate the heat in one place for quick drying. The attachment of the comb nozzle is the same as the airflow concentrator, but ends with comb-like teeth so that the user can blow dry hair without a brush or comb. A hair dryer has been called an effective remedy against lice.
